Sammi Cheng is
one of the most "in" singers in Hong Kong and is incredibly popular. Sammi
Cheng started her singing career in 1988 during a singing contest held
by TVB. At the time, she was 15 and her family didn't want her to join
the contest; but they didn't strongly oppose it either. Her mother didn't
think that Sammi would really win, so she agreed to let her participate.
Surprisingly,
Sammi won 3rd prize. Capital Artist offered Sammi a singing contract at
that time. Sammi had a double-status of a singer and a student at the same
time. During the first few years, she postponed singing in order to finish
her school studies. After graduating from secondary school, she became
a full time singer! Sammi has had hit songs like Chotto Matte and Ding
Dong. But, she never really became popular until she joined Warner Music
in 1995. She has been known to set fashion trends too. When
Sammi started dying
her hair different colors, a lot of people started to do the same...only
in HK schools, this is not allowed! As well, it was not until Sammi started
wearing different colored sunglasses that fans started to do the same.
